Driving on the Technology Highway of Hong Kong

To focus and stimulate technology transfer and development of respective critical components industries, a series of free half-day seminars are being organized monthly by TechMart of HKPC and co-organized by Hong Kong Critical Components Manufacturers Association (HKCCMA),  America Hong Kong Electronics Association (AHKEA) and Hong Kong Optoelectronics Association (HKOEA).

The third seminar was held on Aug 11, 2003  3:30 pm at TechMart of HKPC with over 30 participants. Mr. Robert Li, the Chairman of America Hong Kong Electronics Association, delivered an opening speech, and presented souvenirs to two speakers.

The following two talks were presented:

First talk topic: Speech Technology Platform for Consumer Electronics

Guest Speaker: Mr. Victor Ng, Managing Director, Micom Tech Limited, Vice-Chairman of AHKEA.

u  In thMr. Ng presented two solution platforms of integrated speech technology for consumer electronic applications :

1.      Cost effective solution platform

A solution platform built around a low cost 16bit DSP which can deliver the following embedded functions :

-        Embedded proprietary event driven real-time OS

-        Speech engine : CELP speech @2.8kbps

-        Sound engine : sub-band @ 16kbps

-        Midi engine : midi player of 4-6 channels

-        Voice recognition engine : speaker dependent and speaker independent

-        VOCODER engine : record and playback @ 16kbps

-        Speaker verification engine : speaker verification recognition

2.      High performance solution platform

This is a solution platform built around a 32bit MIPS RISC running at 52MIPs or 92MIPs with the following embedded functions :

-          Embedded proprietary multi-tasking OS

-        ASTell (Advanced Speech Technology Enhancing Language Learning ) recognition engine from ASTRI

-        Speech recognition from ASTRI

-          High quality speech engine @ 16kbps

-          High quality sound/music engine @16kbps or 32kbps

-          Built-in LCD controller to support LCD from 96x32 to 320x240 resolution

-          Embedded internet IP : TCP/IP, SMTP/POP3, HTML 4.0 (subset) - optional

-          Embedded software MODEM : V.32bis and V.34bis - optional

-          Pen-based touch panel - optional

The higher processing power will allow the implementation of different embedded IP for different applications.

Second talk topic: "TRIZ: The Secret Weapon for Product Innovation"

After the talks, a Networking section was arranged, the event was ended successfully at 5:30 pm.
