1 st Optoelectronics Day

Jointly organized by America Hong Kong Electronics Association (AHKEA), Hong Kong Optoelectronics Association (HKOEA)  and Hong Kong Photography and Optics Manufacturers Association (HKPOMA) and co-organized by City University of Hong Kong (CityU), The Hong Kong  Polytechnic University (PolyU) and Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), the 1 st Optoelectronics Day was held on June 27, 2003.

The Objective of this event is to provide an opportunity for the Hong Kong industrialists to get to know about the optoelectronics, the technology, projects and services being carried out by institutions and government organization; followed by a gathering dinner to encourage networking among the field .

Over 30 persons form the industry joined the day-time event. The program was started at 9:00 am at the Multi-Media Conference Room of Cheng Yick-chi Building, CityU. After opening speech by the president of HKOEA Mr. Daniel Lau and agenda briefing by this Program Leader Mr. William Yim, the following Professors presented about their department:

* Department of Electronic Engineering -
   Prodf. Pak Chu, Chief Professor
* Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management (MEEM)-
   Prof Michael Hung, Head
* Student Career and Support -
  Prof. Paul Lam, associate Director, Cooperative Education Centre.




Afterward, three Laboratory Tours were arranged to visit the following laboratories:

* Laboratory of Optoelectronics Research Centre - Presented by Miss Polis Wong
* Laboratory of EPA Centre - Presented by Ms Brenda Lam
* Laboratory of Wireless Communication Research Centre - Presented by Prof Edward Yung
* MEEM Laboratory - Pesented by Dr. Ralph Ip





A nice Networking Lunch was arranged at Lee Kai-shing Building Restaurant, PolyU.

 

After lunch, we met Mr. Edmond Lam, Project Manager and Miss Daisy Yue, Assistant Manager of of Partnership Development Office, they guided two Tours to visit the followings:

* Industrial & Systems Engineering Department
   - Laser Laboratory
   - PCB Centre
   - Ultra-Precision Machining Centre

* Electronic & Information Engineering Department
   - Optoelectronic Laboratory

* Electrical Engineering Department
  - Fiber Optics Laboratory

* House of Innovation - a display of various PolyU projects of all six faculties.






 

After the tours, we met with Dr. Lui Sun-wing, the Vice President of PolyU and Mr. Sidney Wong, associate Director of Institute for Enterprise for discussion on potential collaborations.

After took a group picture, we left PolyU and went to HKPC, to visit the TechMart, Optics Laboratory and Analysis/Lead free/COG Laboratory, the day-time program was successfully ended at 7:15pm.

 

A Networking Dinner was followed at Club Oasis, Yau Yat Tsuen, with 40 persons attended.

The dinner started at 7:45 pm, after a welcome speech delivered by Mr. Robert Li, Chairman of AHKEA, the following talks were performed:

* About Optoelectronics - Mr. Daniel Lau, Founding President of HKOEA
* Laser Application - Mr. William Yim, Chairman of Optoelectronics Solution group, AHKEA
* Introduction on IPC 9151 and new free services by HKPC - Mr. Daniel Chan, Sr. Consultant
   of HKPC ITT Unit
* Collaboration between industry and CityU - Mr. KT Ng, Associate Director, Co-operative Education
   Centre, CityU.

 



Finally, Mr. Stephen Pong, Secretary General of AHKEA, updated the progress of AHKEA, web site's new services and upcoming events. The Networking Dinner was ended fruitfully at 10:00 pm
