One-Day Symposium on
"Photonics R & D in Hong Kong: Opportunities and Challenges"
A one-day Symposium
on "Photonics R & D in Hong Kong: Opportunities and Challenges" was
held on June 13, 2003 at Hong Kong Science Park. Co-sponsored by Hong
Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company
limited (ASTRI),
Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), Hong Kong
Optoelectroncis Association (HKOEA), The Chinese University of Hong
Kong (CUHK), City University of Hong Kong (City U HK), The Hong Kong
Polytechnic University (HK Poly U) and Hong Kong University of
Science and Technology (HKUST), this event attracted over 150
participants from industry and universities.
The Symposium
started at 9:15 am, after Mr. CD Tam - CEO of HKSTP delivered a
welcome and opening remarks, Prof. S.P. Wong, CUHK chaired the morning
session with topic of "Photonics Research in the Academia", the
following speakers delivered four talks respectively:
* Photonics Research at City U HK - Prof. Pak L. Chu
* Photonics Research at CUHK - Prof. Chinlon Lin
* Photonics Research at HKUST - Prof. Hoi-Sing Kwok
* Photonics Research at HK Poly U - Prof. P.K. Alex Wai


Then, Panel
Session I with topic of "Future Challenges of Photonics Research at
the Universities in Hong Kong" was performed and moderated by Prof. Chinlon Lin.
Panelists: Speakers above plus Prof. P.S. Chung (City U HK),
Prof. Kei May Lau (HKUST), Prof. H.Y. Tam
(HK Poly U), Prof. Dennis Lo (CUHK) and Prof. KW Cheah (BU)

A buffet lunch was
arranged at Cyber Cafe, it provided a good networking time for
participants.

The afternoon
session was chaired by Mr. Kenny Chow, Vice Chairman of HKOEA, with
topic of "Photonics Industries in Hong Kong", the following speakers
delivered three talks respectively:
* Photonics R & D at ASTRI - Dr. Frank Tong
* Photonics Center at HKSP - Mr. Peter Yeung
* Photonics R & D in Hong Kong Industries - Mr. Daniel Lau,
President of HKOEA


Then, Panel Session II with topic on "Photonics
Industries in Hong Kong: Roadmap to a Brighter Future" was performed
and moderated by Mr. Lin Chi Hung, VP of ASTRI.
Panelists: Speakers above plus Mr. Kenny Chow (Lite Array OLED), Ir.
SW Cheung (HKSTP) Mr. William Yim
(Sanwa Technologies), Mr. Bernard Leung (Photonics Manufacturing
Services), Dr. Steve Yeung
(Varitronix) and Mr. Bernard Zau (Micro Electronics)

Finally, Ir. SW Cheung delivered a Concluding remarks, the Symposium
was successfully ended at 5:00 pm.
This One-Day Symposium was a very good event in networking and
technology exchange among the Photonics Engineers and Scientists in
Hong Kong. HKOEA has played a role in leading and co-organizing
Photonics Industries and Academia while HKSTP has provided excellent
support in venue and other resources. Thanks to the advanced video
conferencing facilities in HKSP, not only the 120 attendants in
HKSP, but also some 30 students in CUHK have participated this
event thru video conferencing system.
