Driving on the Technology Highway of Hong Kong
Free Seminar -
April Section
To
focus and stimulate technology transfer and development of
respective critical components industries in Optics, Mechanical,
Electronics, Magnetic, Chemical and Environmental Engineering
and IT,
TechMart
of Hong Kong Productivity Council
is
liaising with Hong Kong
Critical Components Manufacturers Association (HKCCMA), America
Hong Kong Electronics Association (AHKEA) and Hong Kong
Optoelectronics Association (HKOEA) to support and
serve the role to foster technology exchange, transfer and
commercialization of respective critical components industries
between Hong Kong, China and overseas.
TechMart joins with AHKEA, HKCCMA
and HKOEA to organize and provide a series of monthly free
seminars.
The
April
Section was
held on 26 April
2004 at
CEPA Business
Centre,
5/F HKPC Building.
The following two talks were presented:
Title :
The new comer, polymer optical fibre --- its advantages,
disadvantages, applications and market situation.
Guest Speaker:
Prof. Pak Chu, Director, Optoelectronics Research Centre, City U
Polymer optical fibre is a newcomer to the field of
communication and sensing although it has been used in lighting
and decoration for some time. This is spurred on by the recent
development of low loss graded-index polymer fibre. It has many
superior advantages over glass fibre such as negotiating a sharp
corner, low joint loss and large optical power carrying
capacities etc. This fibre will find applications in short
distance communication systems such as motor vehicle network,
home and office networks etc. In this talk, a brief review of
the polymer fibre properties, its manufacture and applications
will be described. The present marketing situation of this fibre
will also be discussed.
Title :
OLED Technology
Guest Speaker:
Dr.
K. W. Cheah, Associate Director, Centre for Advanced
Luminescence Materials, Hong Kong Baptist University
Since 1987 OLED performance has reached to a stage whereby
commercial realization becomes a reality. In Hong Kong, research
into OLED device and materials started about 8 years ago, and
within those 8 years many groups in several universities have
began their research into OLED. Funds from both Research Grant
Council and Innovation and Technology Commission have boosted
the research effort with commendable end results. To the point
now that Hong Kong OLED industry has began to ship products and
the Hong Kong OLED activities reflect the rising of OLED market
worldwide. In this talk, a review of the OLED technology will be
conducted; the design of OLED and the materials used will be
presented. Then, a discussion on the fabrication process will
follow. Finally, the trend in panel design and application will
be presented. Throughout this talk, some of the critical points
and issues will be
highlighted.

The event was successfully ended at 5:30pm.
